The Perils of Extremism
Brian Houghton, Ph.D.

Dr. Brian K. Houghton is an associate professor in the political science department at Brigham Young University–Hawaii, where he teaches public policy, public management, disaster management, crisis management, international relations, political inquiry, and on issues of terrorism.  Prior to joining the BYU–Hawaii faculty, Dr. Houghton spent over five years as the Director of Research at the National Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism (MIPT) in Oklahoma City.  Dr. Houghton has also carried out work related to counterterrorism as a founding director of the Terrorism Research Center (, as a fellow at the RAND Corporation, and as a research analyst at the Strategic Assessment Center. Dr. Houghton holds a B.A. in International Relations from Brigham Young University and an M.A. in International Affairs from George Washington University. He has earned his doctorate at the Pardee RAND Graduate School in Policy Analysis with his dissertation focused on the response to chemical terrorism.
